Albuquerque center housing ‘critical’ wildfire dispatch on DOGE termination list as fire risk grows

By: Patrick Lohmann,  Source NM

As Albuquerque and the rest of the state gear up for another wildfire season, a 22,000-square-foot building housing a wildfire dispatch center is on the list of lease terminations announced by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

The building at 2113 Osuna Road Northeast in Albuquerque is the office for the Cibola National Forest Supervisor and also the headquarters of the Albuquerque Interagency Dispatch Center, which coordinates fire response among dozens or potentially hundreds of people from different agencies responding to a wildfire.    Read More

Northern Youth Project Looks to the Future

By Daria Roithmayr

On December 9th of last year, Tres Semillas sold the land across from Bode’s to the Merced del Pueblo Abiquiu and Town of Abiquiu Land Grant. During the summer and fall of last year, Northern Youth Project had already been hard at work preparing a transitional interim plan for the coming season, even as community members protested the sale and tried to persuade Tres Semillas not to sell. Three short months later, NYP is in the midst of transition, as it navigates its next chapter.    Read More

Laying a Foundation for the Future

By Karima Alavi

Click to Read
My last article, The Search for a New Home, recounted the quest for just the right place to build a mosque, and the purchase of Abiquiu land that had previously been used for cattle ranching. Having obtained the land, a small group of American Muslims were determined to situate the mosque at the center of the mesa overlooking the Chama River and Abiquiu pueblo. Once the center was marked, the next step was the actual construction of the mosque which was the first building to go up as part of a plan to eventually create a school, a retreat center, homes, and businesses on the site. The designer hired for this project was Hassan Fathy, the Egyptian architect revered for his dedication to bringing back traditional mud construction as opposed to the use of western architectural designs and materials.

Winter Lichen Garden Vignette

By Felicia Fredd

Click To read
While it’s still winter, I’d like to share a few garden photos that illustrate great ‘winter interest’ in a minimalist natural garden. In this case, it’s all about magical lichen covered boulders that happen to perfectly compliment a small aspen grove in a shady entry area - the sight of which gave me a good jolt of inspiration.  Read and See More

Disc Rot

By Brian Bondy

Click to Read
I just read about this and I was surprised. This issue has been known for several years apparently; however, I had never heard of it. Disc Rot refers to DVDs that have stopped working due to poor manufacturing. The DVD never has to be played or touched, it happens after time, and there is no way to fix the disc. In this case, a great number of DVDs produced by Warner Brothers between the years 2006 and 2008/2009 are no longer working.

The Locals’ Picks Book List

Zach Hively
Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Picture
This week, Jennie recommends The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern: "The Night Circus is the only book I've ever read that made me fall in love with description ... that's usually the part I skim over ... but that book is so full of literal magic I want to obsessively dissect it, and learn its ways until it's a part of who I am."

Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.

Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Eloise

Eloise the Extraordinary! This tortoiseshell bombshell is more than just goddess gorgeous: she’s one of the most resilient cats we’ve ever met. Eloise was found nearly lifeless by a Good Samaritan after being hit by a car. X-rays revealed both her pregnant uterus and abdominal wall had completely herniated. Her kittens were too young to survive, and the internal damage was so severe, we weren’t sure she would make it through surgery to quilt her back together. But thanks to surgical skills, and a little bit of magic in the universe, Miss Eloise defied every odd. She not only survived, but she’s thriving. Though the trauma has caused her to have a little hitch in the hind end, it doesn’t bother her at all, and her purr motor doesn’t have an off switch! Come in to the shelter to adopt this 1yo 6lb love muffin!
We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm!

Buttercup

Meet Buttercup — a tender soul wrapped in fur, waiting for someone to finally call her home. At just 2 years old, Buttercup has already known heartbreak — but you’d never know it by the way she leans in for love, pressing her soft face into your hands like she’s been waiting her whole life for someone to hold on to. Her amber eyes hold hope — silently asking if maybe, just maybe, you’re the one who will choose her. Buttercup is the kind of dog who will follow you anywhere — on long walks, lazy mornings, or simply curled up by your side. Her gentle heart blooms with every kind word and soft touch, showing that even after all she’s been through, her only wish is to love and be loved in return. If you’re searching for a soul who will love you with every beat of her heart, Buttercup is waiting — patiently, quietly, with and a heart ready to be yours. Come meet her today — she’s been waiting her whole life for this chance.

Wanting to rehome our friendly and well mannered 2-year old female Mastiff/Shar Pei cross.  She is a loyal pet who likes people and gets along with other pets but has a tendency to go on walk-abouts looking for adventure.  She is a good watch dog and will bark at strangers but is not aggressive.   She is paper trained if kept inside but she spends most of her time outside.  She knows how to sit, shake paw, down, roll over, and likes her belly rubbed.  A forever home with a fenced area is best for this big girl.  She is spayed, vaccinated, and chipped.  To the right home we will offer her very large Igloo doghouse for a small cost.  Located in Abiquiu.  Call 505-412-8220 if you want to come meet this sweet pup.
