NewsPrescribed Fire Ignitions Completed Near CanjilonFire crews have determined there is no need to continue with hand and aerial ignitions for the broadcast prescribed fire in the 841-acre Blas Unit within the Canjilon Wildland Urban Interface Project. They have been mopping up while patrolling and monitoring the burn area since Sunday and will continue throughout the week.
Personnel will remain in the area to continue checking the fire by walking the unit boundary, mopping up edges, falling hazard trees and monitoring any remaining interior burning. Light smoke may be observed at times from interior smoldering pockets of unburned fuels, but no further growth is expected. The area is experiencing low to moderate intensity fire effects, allowing for a healthier forest while creating a strong buffer against future wildfires around the communities of Canjilon and Placita Garcia. The nearby 899-acre Montoya Unit will be addressed in the future. The area remains open, but locals and visitors should take caution when entering a recently burned area. Motorists should slow down when in the area and near fire crews or equipment. Since 2011, Forest Service staff and partners have been thinning and applying prescribed fire around the communities of Canjilon and Placita Garcia, which are surrounded by Carson National Forest. Many adjacent private landowners, with the assistance of the state, are contributing by thinning and applying prescribed fire on their properties. A map that shows how the Montoya and Blas units fit into the bigger picture is available online. The Canjilon project is part of the 3.8 million-acre Rio Chama Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project, which supports the National Wildfire Crisis Strategy. The public can learn more information about this prescribed fire on InciWeb.

Here, that story comes to life, as do the achievements of its students, faculty, and other craftspeople for whom the Center has been a crucial source of inspiration.

The award-winning history of the women who went West to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway—and went on to shape the American Southwest
From the 1880s to the 1950s, the Harvey Girls went west to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway. At a time when there were "no ladies west of Dodge City and no women west of Albuquerque," they came as waitresses, but many stayed and settled, founding the struggling cattle and mining towns that dotted the region. Interviews and historical research help recreate the Harvey Girl experience. The accounts are personal, but laced with the history the women lived: the dust bowl, the depression, and anecdotes about some of the many famous people who ate at the restaurants—Teddy Roosevelt, Shirley Temple, Bob Hope, to name a few.
The Harvey Girls was awarded the winner of the 1991 New Mexico Press Women's ZIA award.

David Vargas Remembered: One Year Later…
It’s hard to believe that a year has already passed since Abiquiu’ lost you, our sweet, good friend, David Vargas. Time flies by so quickly these days; more and more of us are seeing our friends grow older, maybe leave the area or pass over that rainbow bridge, seeking the next great adventure. And so it was October of 2022, that you, David, surprised us with your departure.
I wanted to carve a minute to remember, celebrate and honor your gentle spirit, your kindness and thoughtfulness to others: David, the philosopher and music aficionado (especially of the 60s & 70s era); David, the Vietnam War veteran; David, the woodworker, extraordinaire. David, the gardener - (well, let’s say, this wasn’t exactly your forte’ – but you certainly tried!) Yes, you wore many hats and touched so many lives in and around Abiquiu’ and northern New Mexico.
No, correct that! ALL of New Mexico! Your gentle presence lives on in the hearts of those of us who were blessed in knowing you…You shared the sort of grace and gentleness, simple kindness, of which this war torn world needs so much more. But so your spirit remains, like the ancient ones who surround all of us here. We salute you. Leaving your tired, frail body earthborn, may you have found peace and joy in this next great adventure of yours.
Vaya con dios, my friend,
Laura Cockerille Giannini

For the Birds - Scaled Quail
Helen Byers and Ed Hagenstein caught this great image of Scaled Quail on their property.
From New Mexico Game and Fish
Scaled quail are a grayish blue bird with a conspicuous white-tipped crest commonly called a “cotton top”. The name scaled quail comes from the fish scale-like feathers on their breast and mantle (upper back). The sexes look similar. However the hen’s crest is smaller with a buff hue and they have brown streaks on their throat. Males’ throat patches are not streaked. Males are typically much bluer than females during mating season. Males call with a high raucous “QUEESH” or a slow rhythmic “ket kut”. The primary coverts on sub-adult birds are tipped with white. |

Do you know how we can find out more information about the two candidates for school board (Espanola Public School District 55-4) and the four candidates for Soil & Water? While I have their names, I am having trouble discovering why I should vote for one candidate over another. Thank you!

Remember Daylight Savings Time ends November 5th at 2AM, so set your clocks back.

Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Lonnie recommends 50 Hikes in Northern New Mexico, by Kai Huschke: "I made it a resolution this year to get outside more. I did a terrible job of it all summer long. This fall now I started hiking more and finally did a couple of the nearby hikes from this book. The descriptions are really clear and directions are useful. My new resolution is to do all 50 of these hikes by the end of next year. This is a really handy book so far." |
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.
A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.
Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

If anyone in the community has a fun and scary animatronic or ghost or something fabulous we could borrow for the Enchanted Garden on Halloween Night at the Library, we would be soooooo grateful and will have it back to you on Wednesday. We have some fun things already, but adding something big and unexpected for the kids would be awesome. Just for the added "scare factor"!
