Weekly WeatherIn GratitudeWe thank Nest and Tamara Kay for renewing their artist sponsorship. Visit Nest in person or online.
We thank Ann McDaniel of New Mexico Real Estate Group, and Beth Stephens for their sponsorships. View Ann's listings online at abiquiuland.com view Beth's listings online at Sotheby's. NestThank you, from my heart, to my supportive community. My neighbors are my family and everyone who visits here, a kindred spirit. I am honored to know you.
There have been, in my life, shops/ spaces that forever changed me with their offerings. I am thinking of you, Present Moment, a new age bookstore in Minneapolis. It was where, in my early twenties, I perused books by the great mystics and smelled jars of dried herbs with fascinating names, like Mugwort. I was expanded by new ideas, and shed old beliefs that no longer served me. That is the power of a great brick and mortar retail space! Nest’s homage to Present Moment is a wall of poetry books. I feel that a great poet offers healing, beauty, and a deep insight into all of the varied and infinite expressions of the Universal Love ooze. To alter a life is a lofty goal for such a small shop…but, I am reaching for the stars here. My personal work for over 30 years of my life has to do with a love and study of gemstones as well as the craft of precious jewelry. I create pieces that hopefully hold significance to the wearer, whether it be a sacred plant, a meaningful gemstone, or a poem etched into metal that reminds the wearer of deep and evergreen Truths. Each piece is made with my highest intention, each one with great care and love. Nest includes the work of artists whose work I admire and that I feel brings heart into our work and living spaces. A hand crafted piece by a skilled maker has and gives a special resonance. A steamer by Dick Lumaghi blesses your carrots, and tea when sipped from a Logan Wannamaker pinch cup is a delight for your hand as well as your tastebuds. Small business Saturday is coming up, and I appreciate you keeping my lovingly curated gallery in mind when searching for gifts of the highest quality, and which are the exact opposite of mass produced. If it's been a while since you have visited, we are always evolving, and it's the perfect time to visit us again. We are open through December 31st every Wednesday-Sunday from 10am-5pm, excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. May the light of the season shine from our hearts. ALAMOSA UNIT 1 (RIO ARRIBA COUNTY)
Fire crews will return Saturday to look for opportunities with weather and on-site conditions to continue treating the 4,500-acre prescribed fire unit north of El Rito. Crews did not move forward with ignitions today due to poor ventilation. Instead, they monitored and patrolled the fire as it slowly moved across on the forest floor consuming surface fuels (see above photo from today). Approximately 2,100 acres have been treated to date. More information about this project is on InciWeb. Beginning the evening of Friday, November 17th, the public boat ramp and parking area will be closed due to construction projects. This closure will remain in effect through Wednesday November 22nd. All other recreation areas will remain accessible on their normal schedule.

The St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) puts together boxes of staples for a nice dinner that includes a ham or a turkey.
These boxes make a huge difference and are so gratefully received. A donation of $20 will give a family a fine Holiday dinner, and is so appreciated. You can make your check out to SVdP - Santo Tomas Conference and mail to Emma Crim, PO Box 1009, Abiquiu, NM 87510 Mary Helen Bondy - In Memory
There was a point in September where it looked like she was starting to ‘crater’. That was her word for when she died. My sister was at my mom’s house in Phoenix and in describing our mom, it sounded like she was taking a turn for the worse, so Carol booked me ticket out there in early October. My brother came out shortly after that.
For the most part, we three spent the last month of her life in her house with her. She was still a bossy pants, wanting things just right, but you could see her shrinking a bit. It was nice to spend this time with her, and to have all of us together. We are a very supportive family and that helped a lot. My mom said she had no problem dying, she just didn’t want to be in pain. She would say she had a great life and had so much to be thankful for, so dying was OK. She mostly was not in pain and the hospice people were a great help. The end came pretty quickly, and she died in her sleep the night of November 3rd. I was thinking this morning how I spoke to my mom every single night for the last 3 years. The pandemic depressed her a bit, as she felt isolated, so we agreed that I would Facetime her. It seemed to help. It helped us both, really. It was nice to talk to her, sometimes only briefly. There wasn’t much to say most of the time, as neither of us did much. It was just nice to connect and see her and talk about whatever stuff went on in our day. It’s weird being in her house and knowing she’s not coming back. At the same time, there’s a comfort being in the home she and my father loved so much. Soon though, I’ll be coming back to my home and resuming my regular, daily life of nonsense. Only I won’t be able to Facetime my mom and tell her about it anymore.

Mario Manzo soars over Copper Canyon
Thursday, Nov 9, morning, I launched from the rim of the "Great Wall" (northern segment of the "Red Wash (Copper Canyon) Wall". When I got 1,900' above take off level I looked downwind towards Ghost Ranch and decided it was time to try for it, like I've thought about doing many times. Didn't worry about how to get back, but that worked out well too. I had flying friends at the site with me. I did walk a mile or so but friend Aaron, from Los Alamos, picked me up. ~ Image by MarioMario Manzo Send us your Questions, Comments to info@abiquiunews.com
Do you know what is happening with the lake? I have never seen the river running so high - and it is VERY high - so late in the year - usually it's only a trickle. The lake is shockingly low.
Katy B We reached out to the folks at the dam and will report their answer next week. Looking for Forever Home
Born 9/1/2023 in healthy litter of 8 puppies Eating well: puppy dry food with some canned puppy food. Love wrestling with my brothers, love human attention. I would thrive best if you also took one of my “Bros” so we could entertain each other and have a warm friend to sleep with since we will be missing the 8 of us making a warm puppy pile at night. Mother Dog is a Purebred Blue Heeler, Dad unidentified Please call ASAP to reserve, even if you need to pick up on weekend. For any puppies unspoken for, Foster Dad is taking to the Espanola animal shelter. Please call Foster Grandmother, Donna 505-685-4276 to schedule viewing Re-Homing CalyRose
Like to go on long hikes? Then CalyRose is your girl! A 2.5 year old Husky mix, she runs like the wind. Playful and energetic, she knows basic commands. She’d be a good ranch dog. Otherwise you’ll need to have a fenced yard since, as one trainer put it: “Huskies will chase anything that moves.” She’s been living with a cat that she treats as a playmate and would do well with another dog to play with. She’s fixed and up to date on vaccinations. Caly is a sweet and devoted companion and protector dog, and though I will miss her terribly, I want to do what’s best for her. For more info and to meet her, email: alohasmarty@gmail.com
We’ve had the unexpected great pleasure of helping raise these dear kittens along with their sweet mother, a stray who chose our garden shed as her birthing place. We are adopting her. Her babes are now 11-12 weeks old and are looking for their next loving, safe and happy homes. Two of the litter are with their new families and we have two females and a male still needing adoption. They are cuddlers and purr machines, enjoying human laps and companionship, as well as playful, feisty and delightfully curious about the world.
They have had their first set of vaccinations at the Espanola Shelter and are scheduled for their second set in a few days. I’m happy to help arrange spay and neutering, also with the Shelter, which can happen soon. If interested send an email or call/text me - 925-899-6886. Wobbly
Wobbly is a two-month-old kitten with herky-jerky moves that would win an Elaine from Seinfeld dance competition. This magical and mighty little marvel has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, a developmental disorder in which the cerebellum of the brain fails to develop properly. The cerebellum is the portion of the brain that controls fine motor skills, balance, and coordination. Kittens with cerebellar hypoplasia are not infectious to other kittens or cats, are not in any pain, and will learn to adapt to their challenges over time, though Wobbly will need to be kept indoors. We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm! www.espanolahumane.org 505-753-8662 Buck
We can’t get enough of this hambone of a hound!!! Buck is a bucket of laughs with hysterical expressions, his giant floopy-floppy-mcflopface ears flapping comically all over the place, and his game-for-everything attitude. Buck and his two siblings were the absolute stars of our Puppy Yoga class last weekend in Santa Fe, and now they are entertaining guests of Ojo Santa Fe resort at our Puppy Patch. It’s time for them to find their forever homes, though, so they can bring this level of joy to their families. Buck and his bro Boone and his sis Dixie are available for adoption: submit an application on our website and we can schedule an appointment at the resort in Santa Fe! Each pup goes home spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines & dewormer, microchipped, and with six months of free heartworm prevention! www.espanolahumane.org 505-753-8662 |
