Weekly WeatherWe thank Isabel and Sam Jewell for renewing the sponsorship for Espanola Humane. Thank you for helping us get their word out.
At Española Humane, our mission is to keep pets and people together, fostering a thriving and compassionate community. With a dedication spanning over three decades, we've provided over 7,000 free spay/neuter surgeries in 2023 alone, alongside essential vaccines and abundant love for each furry friend. Despite the challenges of 2023, which saw a 30% increase in unwanted and stray dogs and cats (4,532), our team responded with innovative programs. Initiatives like Paws in the Pen, a training program in the state penitentiary, Flying Floofs and Transports, which found homes in-state and outside the state with sister shelters and rescue organizations, and our Pet Amigos Outreach, which helps with neighborhood dogs and cats, resulting in a 21% increase in positive outcomes. As we move forward, join us in refining existing programs and creating new ones to address our community's evolving needs. Together, we can transform the lives of animals most in need of care and affection. To learn more about our initiatives, please visit www.espanolahumane.org or drop by Española Humane at 108 Hamm Pkwy, Española, NM, 87532. Let's provide More Love Per Paw. This week, Jo recommends The Good Lord Bird, by James McBride: "My favorite of the year. A rousing tale about abolitionist John Brown and the ultimate raid on Harper’s Ferry. The story is told through the eyes of a recently freed teenage boy, Henry “Little Onion” Shackleford, who spends most of the book dressed as and impersonating a girl. It’s absurd, funny, exciting and tragic." |

Book Review
by BD Bondy
Carol and I have been traveling more than usual. One of the things that helps pass the time in the car is listening to books. We just listened to The Perfect Predator by Steffanie Strathdee and Thomas Patterson. I had read a news article about them several years ago and when I heard about the book coming out, I was excited to find out more of their story. Essentially, Thomas gets a superbug that is antibiotic resistant, and Steffanie comes up with an alternate way to fight it.
This is not just a story about a sick person with a weird illness, as it becomes apparent that this is a potential crisis awaiting the world, and one which needs immediate attention. Fortunately, it appears that this story may just bring that about.
There are bacteria out there that no longer respond to antibiotics, the most common one being MRSA. But as more antibiotics are thrown at bacteria, they are adapting, and the more quickly we throw them, the more quickly they adapt. The bacteria is definitely gaining, however, there is another weapon available, one that was studied a hundred years ago and mostly dropped when antibiotics came about.
This weapon is called phages, a type of virus that ‘eats’ bacteria. The trick is finding the right phages for the bacteria, and then keeping up with the bacteria’s adaptations. The book was a wild ride starting before Thomas gets sick and ending with the hope of a new front in the fight against bacterial infections.

Zia
Zia just graduated from eight weeks of training in the Penitentiary of New Mexico through our Paws in the Pen program. She is house, leash, and crate trained, and she responds to a whole list of training cues! Zia is a ray of light, just like the sun sign she was named for, and she has the fanciest danciest prance! In her pre-shelter life, she adored kids - she even loved to have her toenails painted - and her best friend was …. a duck. Zia is a beautiful 53lb one-year-young Aussie mix, with unique markings and a huge raccoon tail - she’s ready to make her family smile bright as the sun!
Zia is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, goes him with six months of free heartworm prevention, and we also offer four free training sessions to ensure a smooth transition. Apply on our website or email
