Weekly WeatherIn GratitudeWe thank Barbara Campbell for renewing her artist sponsorship and all she has done to promote the arts.
I intended to study foreign diplomacy and took a pottery class elective in my first year of college. I was so fascinated by the material; I transferred into Fine Arts and got my degree in Ceramics. I have been exploring the infinite facets of pottery making ever since. I have lived and worked in the village of El Rito since 1978. My current work is mainly functional stoneware, but I am spending more and more time on decorative and architectural pieces. In 2006 I began teaching workshops at the Ghost Ranch Convention Center North of Abiquiu. At the Ghost Ranch I have gotten involved in kiln building, many different types of firing including, Raku, Fume and Wood firing. My work over the past ten years has morphed from functional into sculptural and wall pieces. I designed the mural on Lower Pavilion at the Ghost Ranch.

You spoke, and we listened! It is with great enthusiasm that we announce a significant decision: the Abiquiú Arts Council will produce two separate events to better serve our community and preserve the rich tradition of the Abiquiú Studio Tour. First and foremost, we will continue to celebrate the remarkable legacy of the Abiquiú Studio Tour by hosting this beloved event on October 12th and 13th, 2024. The decision to not do the tour on Monday is out of respect and observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The studio tour tradition, spanning 30 years, is a cornerstone of our artistic community, and we are committed to upholding its excellence and vibrancy. Additionally, we are delighted to introduce a new event: The Abiquiú Gathering of Artisans. This event will take place during one weekend in the summer, TBD, and will serve multiple purposes. Not only will it provide another platform for talented artisans to showcase their work, but it will also serve as an opportunity to promote the Studio Tour and our esteemed artists. Furthermore, the Gathering will fulfill the educational requirements of our 501(c)(3) status, enriching our community with valuable insights into the arts and fostering greater appreciation for the creative process. These decisions were made with careful consideration of your feedback and suggestions. Your voices are instrumental in shaping the direction of our organization, and we are deeply grateful for your continued engagement and support. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and passion for the arts. We look forward to celebrating these exciting events with all of you. We are planning a public meeting on Thursday, April 4th where the details of these two events will be revealed. Look for an official announcement on here and via our artist member email list soon. NM State Parks Division is reaching out to our loyal customers to provide you with important information regarding proposed changes to our fees structure and park rules.
State Parks has 35 locations in 25 of New Mexico’s 33 counties. State Parks rely heavily on self-generated revenue through entrance and camping fees, concessions, and other related revenue streams to accomplish its mission of enhancing natural and cultural resources, providing first-class recreational and education facilities and opportunities, and promoting public safety to benefit and enrich the lives of more than five million visitors each year. State Park’s current fees, which are set by rule, have not been updated in decades and have not kept pace with inflation. NM State Parks are decades behind surrounding states when it comes to our fees structure. Adjustments are necessary to better support park operations and maintain our beautiful landscapes with diverse natural and cultural resources for future generations. To address these concerns, NM State Parks Division completed an extensive evaluation of our fees structure and compared our rates to surrounding states as well as considered the impacts of inflation. The principal objective of the Fees Study was to explore options to adjust fees to address that gap to both improve the agency’s financial position while also enhancing the Division’s mission to maintain affordable state park access for New Mexico citizens and visitors to our state. Based on the completed study, the NM State Parks Division has proposed several revisions to our rules. Key recommendations from our Fees Study include: • Elimination of day-use fees for New Mexico residents. • Implementation of a non-resident day-use fee. • Eliminating Annual Passes. • Adjusting camping and utility fees. • Adjusting boat registration and launching fees. • Adjusting entrance fees at Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and Smokey Bear Historical Park. The NM State Parks Division is in the process of soliciting public input on our recommended rule revisions. We are holding informational meetings across the state to provide information on our recommendations to the public. We encourage you to review our recommendations and meeting schedule in full on our website at http://www.emnrd.nm.gov/spd/public-meetings/. To submit comments on our proposed revisions, please email EMNRD-ParksComments@emnrd.nm.gov or mail your comments to EMNRD-State Parks Division, 1220 S. St. Francis Dr., Santa Fe, NM 87505 Dear Abiquiu community,
I’m writing a story about the little black dog that used to live in the parking lot at Bode’s. I know that many people knew him, cared for him, looked for him, and had stories about him before I adopted him in 2021. He went by the name Bugsy for a time before I named him Jujubee. I’m posting this to the community as a request for anyone who may want to share any memories, stories or pictures of him. FYI, Juju is very healthy, happy and a true blessing to myself and everyone. He sends love and gratitude to all for keeping him alive and safe until he found his home with us! Please email me, Istara Freedom- at istara333@gmail.com Thank you for the consideration! ~ Istara When you think of a Turkey Vulture's feathers, what color comes to mind? Probably black, or maybe dark brown, but check out all the different colors that show up in Ambassador Animal Sol's feathers when he stands in the sunlight!
A lot of birds have iridescent feathers that reflect lots of different colors in bright light. Hummingbirds, especially the males of many species, are particularly well-known for having shiny, reflective, colorful feathers. Black-billed Magpies' wing and tail feathers reflect rainbows of color that add pizzazz to their otherwise black-and-white palette. And as you can see in this photo, Turkey Vultures can be a lot more colorful than the black silhouettes you see soaring high in the sky! There are two main ways that feathers get the colors we see: some color is created by pigments in the feather, and some color is created by the way light reflects off specialized structures in the feather. The dark brown colors in Sol's feathers are created by a pigment called melanin, the same pigment that gives humans our variety of skin tones! Sol's shiny blue and purple highlights, however, are created by microscopic structures in the feathers that scatter certain light wavelengths and reflect others. The reflected wavelengths are the ones we see, and our eyes usually see that light in shades of purple, blue, and green!
