Residents launch petition regarding proposed El Rito bridge project

A group of El Rito residents has started a petition to halt the proposed construction of a new bridge on Hwy 554 over El Rito Creek in the village, citing several concerns. First among them is that a new, larger bridge will inevitably result in more and heavier truck traffic down Main Street, compromising the old adobe structures that sit close to the road, increasing noise and air pollution, posing greater risk to pedestrians and harming the character of the historic town.

Also of concern is the loss of trees and wildlife habitat due to construction and the fact that the proposed new bridge will be significantly wider than the current one.

The residents’ petition to the New Mexico Department of Transportation asks that the bridge proposal be reconsidered given the impact on the community, and that the comment period, currently set to expire on November 2, be extended.

To learn more about the petition and the project, contact KT Vanderbrook at ktvanderbrook@gmail.com or (575) 581-4597, or Lina Alegre at ecarolina.alegre@gmail.com .

The NMDOT is currently seeking and collecting comments until Nov. 2 at

The Locals’ Picks Book List

Zach Hively
Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Picture
This week, Ali recommends Everybody Needs a Rock, by Byrd Baylor: "I know there are a lot of rock hounds in our area! This is a picture book for kids. I also think a whole lot of us adults will like how this book talks about finding the right rock for us. We can think of it as a poem with pictures. A book every Abiquiú area home could have on its coffee table!"
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.

Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Why We’re Starting This School
As parents and educators, we’ve seen how much children thrive when they’re given time, space, and trust to learn in their own way. With the challenges facing public education today, many families are looking for something different—something more connected, creative, and meaningful. We want to build a school where learning feels natural and joyful, where curiosity is encouraged, and where every child is seen and supported. By blending Montessori’s hands-on independence with Waldorf’s warmth, imagination and rhythm, we hope to create a true community of learning—one that helps children grow into capable, compassionate, and curious human beings.

Jessie

Jessie is a two year old little shepherd mix with a heart as big as her smile and a wigglebutt that never quits! This sweet girl loves to carry her toys around to proudly show them off to everyone she meets!

Jessie is gentle, loyal, and at her best in a calm, loving home where she can feel safe. She tends to bond especially well with men and, once she trusts you, becomes the most devoted snuggle buddy you could ask for. If you’ve got a kind heart and a quiet space for a sweet soul to bloom, Jessie just might be your perfect match.

Sid

Have you ever seen a more perfect face? Sid’s is the kind you want to boop, frame, and maybe write poetry about. With those soulful eyes, soft whiskers, and the tiniest smirk that says “I know I’m adorable,” he looks like he was hand-painted by the universe just to melt hearts. One look, and you’ll understand why everyone here is utterly, hopelessly smitten.

Sid is a big, soft-hearted gentleman with eyes that could melt the moon. He’s 2 perfect years old, 11lbs, and he’s mastered the art of affection: cozy naps, gentle headbutts, and those slow, soul-deep blinks that say “you’re my person.” He’s neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped!www.espanolahumane.org
