The Tin Moon Gallery – Before and After

A conversation with Ton Haak
By Jessica Rath

Click to read.
This is another chapter of Abiquiú’s more recent history, about a couple from the Netherlands who lived here for twelve years, from 1997 to 2009, and left quite a mark on the region: Ans Zoutenbier and Ton Haak. They ran The Tin Moon Gallery across from Bode’s, which some of you will remember as the Rising Moon Gallery, the name Jaye Buros and Bill Page gave it after they took over from Ans and Ton.

That New Mexico is among the states with the highest rates of firearm deaths is no secret. The state Department of Health calls gun-related deaths a public health emergency, noting that New Mexico is fifth in the nation for overall firearm mortality. Firearms were the second leading cause of death for children and teens in the state, between 2019 and 2023.

For the Birds

Patient care is never straightforward but it makes their release all the sweeter!

Northern Harrier Hawk, patient 24-917, was initially seen on the ground in late October of 2024 hopping around and unable to fly. Rescuers transported him to NMWC and on intake exam our rehabilitation team discovered he had a fractured ulna. The fracture was not fresh since he was emaciated and the injury was already forming a bony callus. Fortunately, surgical intervention was not needed and a simple stabilizing wrap was placed to restrict mobility of the wing.

Then commenced the process of refeeding - beginning with a liquid diet then slowly introducing solids in assisted feeds until he was eating on his own. After less than a month, his fracture was healing well and he was able to be moved to an outside enclosure to begin flight conditioning. However, because NOHAs are very high stress birds in care, he began to damage his wings by jumping around his enclosure. He was upgraded to a larger enclosure, but the damage on his wings required further care to heal. With additional ‘bumper bandages’ and continued monitoring, he continued to flight condition and heal throughout the winter. But once one problem healed, yet another presented itself. In the spring we discovered a few of his primary feathers and tail feathers were broken, compromising his flight, and thus extending his time in care even longer. He stayed with us through the summer, slowly molting and regrowing his broken feathers, and finally FINALLY, after nearly a year in care, he was ready for release! His feathers were in excellent condition, his flight was beautiful and he was returned to Bernalillo county.

The Locals’ Picks Book List

Zach Hively
Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Picture
This week, Genesis recommends When I Walk Through That Door, I Am, by Jimmy Santiago Baca: "Recent events in our country got me remembering this book, so I read it again. It's a heart wrenching story in poetry form, about a mother from El Salvador trying to find her son in the United States. This one person goes through so much horrible hardship as a migrant woman. Baca's words go straight to my heart. This little book shows us exactly what other people are going through right now and always."
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.

Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Why We’re Starting This School
As parents and educators, we’ve seen how much children thrive when they’re given time, space, and trust to learn in their own way. With the challenges facing public education today, many families are looking for something different—something more connected, creative, and meaningful. We want to build a school where learning feels natural and joyful, where curiosity is encouraged, and where every child is seen and supported. By blending Montessori’s hands-on independence with Waldorf’s warmth, imagination and rhythm, we hope to create a true community of learning—one that helps children grow into capable, compassionate, and curious human beings.

Blueberry

Blueberry is the cutest little snowberry in the patch! He might be white as a whipped cloud, but this boy’s heart is sweet as blueberry pie. This 2yo 70lb pittie mix is a joyful burst of sunshine, and he’s always up for a morning walk, thinking every passerby might just be his new best friend. Though he’s got plenty of laughter-inducing zoomies, Blueberry’s real magic is his big, bountiful love; he’s endlessly loyal, tail is always wagging, and his adoration of all overflows like a too-full berry basket.

If you’re ready for a sweet treat, come meet Blueberry: his adoption fee is waived and he goes home neutered, vaccinated, chipped, and with six months of free heartworm prevention.

We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm and Hocus goes home spayed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped for an adoption fee of $25.
