Maura Allen

My love of Abiquiu started the day I was expelled from school – from a photography workshop in Santa Fe, to be exact. That was 20+ years ago. With a day free in New Mexico, I made the drive and then every other year or so, I would find myself back here, in the light, in the fields, taking in the quiet, inspiring beauty. I love when tough days turn into magical ones. I’m thrilled, now, to call Abiquiu home.

A photographer for nearly 50 years and mixed media artist for 25+, stories of the American West are my focus. I’m drawn to the real and the romanticized—how both myth and legend shape our view.

All my work starts on location, at ranches, rodeos or the wide-open spaces of Abiquiu and beyond. With my images as my starting point, using the most basic form—the silhouette—to convey big stories. I mix in vintage elements (type, wallpaper patterns, handwritten postcard notes from those traveling West at the turn of the century and more) to evoke a “past is always present feeling.” I create work of all sizes, from small treasures to hotel lobby-sized paintings. My medium? Acrylic on panel and most recently, glass. With some glass pieces fired in the kiln 40+ hours at 1450 degrees, how heat, light and time interplay is what I love exploring.

I show and sell my work at museum shows and galleries throughout the West, including at Nest in Abiquiu and Sorrel Sky in Santa Fe and Durango. 2025 marks my first year in the Abiquiu Studio Tour—a weekend of art and community; I feel I’ve come full circle since my first visit.

studio one thirty nine

Studio One Thirty Nine is nestled in the valley of Abiquiu along the Rio Chama River.  The old chicken coop renovated by Debra and Frank is now two studio spaces with a contemporary gallery.  This coop is also a teaching facility for participants interested in ceramic sculpture.

Debra is a ceramic artist who works intuitively with red clay searching for a deep spiritual level in the sculpture.  Her interest is in expressing beauty inspired by nature and in allowing the rawness of the surrounding land speak her personal truth and appreciation.

Frank is a painter and sculptor collaborating with the visual, physical and spiritual entities.

They are both inspired by the light, the surface of the land, and the rich culture of New Mexico.

In baseball as in life.
Two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Game Seven of the World Series. The opponent’s ace throws me a heater. I murder it! The crowd goes bonkers as I win the championship for the Kansas City Royals. After celebrating, I fetch the Wiffle ball from the other side of the house, and I set up to win it all over again.

Gold: what kind of investment is it?
Gold is a difficult asset for an Advisor to recommend because it has nothing to measure it by. No earnings, no revenue, no debt to equity ratio, no P/E ratio, etc. nothing to measure it by, EXCEPT price.

Over the years I have setup hundreds of computers. Up until a couple of years ago I would also add a few things I thought were useful, like CCleaner and Malwarebytes, and I’d change some settings that I thought were helpful. These days I generally don’t do that and leave that stuff to the user.

The Locals’ Picks Book List

Zach Hively
Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Picture
This week, Zach recommends A Soliloquy of Some Disconnected Tales, by Thomas E. Chávez: "Another new release from Casa Urraca Press! The renowned New Mexico historian Thomas E. Chávez places several short stories across historic time periods, from medieval Europe to the U.S. Civil War to earlier times right here in northern New Mexico. There's even an appearance by Sherlock Holmes! Despite the title, the stories all come from the mind of the storyteller in the book, who holds conversations with his own Fate between tales. A charming, quirky book for those who appreciate a dose of history from one of the best."

This book comes out officially on October 21 but early release copies will be available at the Abiquiú Studio Tour. You can order yours for free Studio Tour pickup on the Casa Urraca Press website now.
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.

Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Why We’re Starting This School
As parents and educators, we’ve seen how much children thrive when they’re given time, space, and trust to learn in their own way. With the challenges facing public education today, many families are looking for something different—something more connected, creative, and meaningful. We want to build a school where learning feels natural and joyful, where curiosity is encouraged, and where every child is seen and supported. By blending Montessori’s hands-on independence with Waldorf’s warmth, imagination and rhythm, we hope to create a true community of learning—one that helps children grow into capable, compassionate, and curious human beings.

Rio

Rio! Like his name, this pup flows with joy and energy! Black-and-white and cute all over, 7-month-old 43lb Rio is currently making waves in our 8-week 24/7 Paws in the Pen training program at the Penitentiary of New Mexico. This river of sweetness is as smart as they come—he learns fast, has some of the best leash skills we’ve seen in ages, and loves showing off his “middle” move (sliding right between your legs with a proud grin). He’s all in for playtime too: Rio will plop toys on your lap, flash a smile and a rear-to-ear wiggly wag, and invite you into a game of tug. He’s even part water dog—happy to splash and snorkel for treats! Underneath all that play is a gentle soul with endless potential, ready to flow right into a forever home.

Apply for Rio on our website and we can schedule a meetup! www.espanolahumane.org

Pirate

Don’t let the name fool you—Pirate is more cuddlebug than swashbuckler! This one-eyed wonder may have the look of a tiny adventurer, but her treasure isn’t gold or glory—it’s your lap.

Pirate came to us through a transfer after losing one eye, yet she never lost her sparkle. When she first arrived, she’d give a polite little hiss, like a whisper that said, “I’m scared, but I’m trying.” Never mean, never rough—just a tender soul learning the world could be kind. Now she’s a full-fledged lovebug, purring the instant you reach out a hand. She melts for gentle chin scratches and those soft, slow strokes along her cheeks. Because she has one eye, Pirate will need to stay safely indoors—where she can chase sunbeams, not storms. She might do well with other gentle pets, as long as introductions are done slowly and kindly.

If you’re ready for a sweetheart with the courage of a captain and the tenderness of a kitten who’s weathered her storms, Pirate is ready to sail straight into your heart.
